During my 4 hour lunch break, I felt like finally visiting the town I work in for a bit since I haven't had a chance to do the touristy things here. It was quote a strange feeling when I replaced my uniform by some casual summer clothes. Wearing my work clothes usually gives me the feeling of being watched and I got used to people greeting me on the street and recognizing me. But when I then wore my normal clothes, it felt like something was wrong, like I was doing something forbidden and therefore it really took some time to feel normal, relaxed and touristy again without being watched all the time. My first thing as a temporary tourist was visiting the Fortezza which offers a lovely view over the city from all different angles. The one hour walk along the castle walk helped me to relieve some tension as well as to clear my mind. As the American author Susan Sontag once said: "The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own".
After enjoying the city Rethymnon from above I was strolling through the lovely old town with its little alleyways. I realized once more that it is the greatest feeling just getting lost in a beautiful surrounding without having a specific destination in mind just staying curious where you will end up. And it's in those situations when you find the nicest little cafés and restaurants that at first sight completely invite you to stay. So I had a little Crêpe with a glass of fresh orange juice and enjoyed watching the crowd pass by as well as reading this book I borrowed from a colleague. The story is set on the island Spinalonga in the North-East if Crete and I found it so easy to put myself in the main character's position and dive right into the plot cause I know the places and what she is talking about. I think I was sitting there for an hour getting lost in the book and completely forgot everything about guest complaints, the daily search for parking lots and tiredness that slowely grew over the last few days. Maybe reading does have a healing effect.... "I've never known any trouble that an hour's reading didn't assuage" (Arthur Schoppenhauer).
