The Greek way of living

"In still moments by the sea life seems large-drawn and simple. It is there we can see into ourselves." (Rolf Erdberg)

Life in Greece has been a new experience again. Whenever you are close to the sea, life somehow is completely different: people are more relaxed and laid-back, sometimes everything is chaotic and looks like a complete mess and as long as you are new there, you are suprised of how somehow things always seem to work out in the end despite the lack of rules or their breach. And the sea is something that accompanies me all the time: in the morning when I wake up and steo on my balcony where I can see it in the distance, then on the way to work where I drive along the seafront and for some reason it gives me the blues. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once found the perfect words to describe that feeling: "My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea, and the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me."

What I also always find very interesting is the way supermarkets are organised as well as the variety of products they offer. What I noticed first was the bread that is being stored in the cooler section and that the variety of Feta cheese is great. Since I am a huge fan of freshly sqeezed orange juice, I was delighted to find half liter bottles for just € 0,90.
Nevertheless, the biggest surprise was the olive oil. Just knowing the ones we can buy back home in Vienna, I had no idea of how amazing olive oil can actually taste. It's like freshly squeezed olive juice that challanges your gustative nervs and there is nothing better than fresh bread with salt and olive oil.
Also a nice evening in a Greek taverna where you order all the great startes is a nice way to let the evening gently fade away...
