A little trip into the past...

As I woke up this morning seeing the sun shine into my room, I knew I wanted to explore the mountain area a bit more and spend the day in dizzy heights. The island map as my loyal companion I picked out two places I wanted to visit. As fait would have it, I passed by both of the places without even realizing it and since I was already very close to the south, I abandoned my original plans and headed south to Agia Galini.

On the way there, I passed very small towns consisting only of a few houses and I really felt like travelling into the past. I saw an old woman with a donkey who waved at me as she probably doesn't see many tourists on that small road I was taking.

In another town, I stopped to take a picture of a small church when an old villager came out of her house to ask me if I wanted to enter the church. Although I don't speak much Greek and didn't actually understand the words she was saying, I kinda knew what she meant and waited for her to come back with a huge key. She unlocked the church door for me, entered and immediately kissed all the icons and I followed her slowly into the holy room. When we left she gave me one of the Jesus postcards and also invited my for a delicious Greek coffee. When I entered the room which I guess was supposed to be a tiny version of a kafenion, I saw three men sitting there enjoying their coffees, smoking their cigarettes and playing with their Kombolois. I savored this unique opportunity to spend time with the locals, drank my coffee and watched as the woman crocheted a small scarf, explaining me the process along the way which I understood without even knowing the words.

And it was then, when I was sitting with those hospitable people that it dawned on me that all those little details might perfeclty merge into a setting of a nice novel which I plan to write while being here. And all of a sudden all those great ideas popped into my head so quickly that I had problems writing them all down at the same time. I left with a huge smile on my face exactly knowing what the story will be about and got back to my car heading south to Agia Galini.

There I enjoyed the setting of the little town, started taking notes again and left for my way back to Rethymnon, where I enjoyed a nice late lunch in a taverna with a beautiful view.
