After celebrating the eve before my birthday, everyone else had to work the next day so I decided to go on a little road trip on my own. First stop was the beautiful cave of Melidoni which buries a sad story in the course of Cretan resistance against the Turkish siege. Many people lost their life in the cave in the fight for freedom and the white tomb in the middle of the cave was built as their memorial and a place where their bodies can rest in peace forever.
The next stop was at the Museum of Wooden Sculptures in Axos where George Koutantos displays his life.sized wooden sculptures of Cretans all based on photographs of people within the region. The most interesting one was a wedding party during the Greek wedding ceremony where he explained all the rituals and traditions.
And since this was the day of caves, I also visited the Zanonia Cave where millenia old stalagmites and stalactites where beautifully displayed in different colours of lights.
Actually I did plan another stop on the other side of the mountains on the way back to Rethymnon but for some reason I did not really read the road signs and my map correctly which is why I ended up in the middle of nowhere. After a circle of about 20 kilometers I ended up at the cave again where I started and since the afternoon was almost over, I decided to head home as I still had a long way across the mountains ahead of me.
genial!!!! i like! :)
