Driving like the Greek

"Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the journey." (Babs Hoffman)

My rental car
With my rental car, I am driving very day to work. Now that I finally manage to find my way from A to B, all I need to worry about is the  crazy drivers on the road I still haven't got used to. Driving on Crete is completely different than driving in Austria and requires good nerves, intuition and maneuverability. There is nothing that doesn't exist on these roads: moped drivers without helmets talking on the phone while driving, cars and mopeds that are approaching you on your lane without any fear of stress of going back to their own lane and it is common to drive half on the lane, half on the breakdown lane so that faster cars can pass by comfortably. Also people just stop in the middle of the street and turn on their emergency flasher if they want to go to the kiosk and also for parking you signalize that you are looking for a parking lot by turning the emergency flasher on. What makes it even more difficult to navigate within the city is the tousend one way streets that drove me crazy in the beginning. Fortunately, I am now slowly getting used to them a little and day by day I find it a bit easier to find the way to all my hotels. Once you are used to the directions, you only need to watch out for people who ignore stop signs, people jumping on the street out of nowhere and moped drivers who pass by on the left and right side or also driving against the flow of a one-way street. In this context, a nice saying comes to mind that hits the nail on the head: "I'm all about sharing the road with other drivers... as long as they use the part that's behind me!!"
